- The car
- The out-of-state title
- Smog certificate (showing the car passed)
- A completed Application for Title
- Money (cash, check, debit card, but NOT credit card)
Step 1. Have the technician at the DMV verify your vehicle. S/he will thoroughly check your vehicle for VINs, etc.
Step 2. Go inside and give the clerk the out-of-state title, smog certificate, and completed Application for Title.
Step 3. Pay registration fee and use fee (which is based on the purchase price and the sales tax rate in your city/town of residence).
Step 4. Walk away with registration and license plates with tags. The DMV will mail you your California title.

seems that you and ownership are getting on quite nicely!
Very similar to South Australia except for the smog bit.
Belated congrats on your new purchase. Is there going to be a review / overview of the car? Which engine is in it?
I just checked - they never came to Oz (we lack the required class I imagine), so I'm currently picturing a big Passat (no offence intended).
I thought about buying a used A8 once, then decided I should probably pay off the mortgage instead.
@Lukas: Thanks, dude. Mine has the same 4.2 liter V8 that's in Audis. The Phaeton was built alongside the Bentley Continental. It's like the Audi A8L, but it's heavier (steel vs. aluminum).
Yeah, I was checking world production numbers and none made it to Oz. It sold poorly in the U.S. In 2005, my year, only 820 were sold here. They stopped selling them here after 2006.
