Car costs in 1986 (U.S. versus West Germany)
From How to Import A European Car (1985). Are those price differences for real? If so, then the manufacturers, dealerships, and Uncle Sam made a killing. No wonder there were so many gray market cars.

Looks unlikely, more taking into account the taxes on Europe.
Can't really say, as I was only three at the time, but it doesn't seem credible. Seems like an ad for a grey importer. :)
