Eating the Globe: Small Jackpot

I had not planned on crossing any countries off the list today when we went to Saul's Deli this morning. Saul's is a neighborhood Jewish deli in Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto (just a block away from Chez Panisse). I have been going there for years, but it wasn't until today that I noticed the many different entrees from different countries. The variety speaks to the vastness of the Jewish diaspora. They include:

- Shakshouka: Tunisian dish with an egg baked in spicy cumin tomato sauce, oregano, and parsley. (Photos via Yelp).

-Malawach: Yemeni fried bread. Comes with fresh tomato, labne yogurt cheese, zhoug (Yemeni green chile paste), harissa (red chile paste), and a poached egg.

-Poutine: Canadian fries with au jus, mozzarella curds, and herbs.

-Karnatzlach: Grilled Romanian turkey patties.

Etc., etc., etc.

I just had a regular ol' corned beef hash and eggs today. Next time.
