Bristol Fighter review

American politics and global terrorism have me depressed. So here is a review of the rare Bristol Fighter, which apparently has the Viper's 8 liter V10!

2016 Anti-Football Run

Having attended the annual Anti-Football Run many times, the event has become more of an opportunity to catch up with friends than checking out the cars.

I did spot a minor car celebrity yesterday though-- Brian Cooley, the CNET Car Tech guy. He's tall.

One car that did stand out was this Bristol.

This Ferrari 412 was pretty sweet.

We rode in rchen's Citroen XM. The sky was clear and the temperature not too low. Topics of conversation included 3D printed dresses and Servas International, an international, post-war organization devoted to promoting cultural understanding and peace.

On the way home, I listened to the Hooniverse podcast featuring guest Jonny Lieberman. Lieberman was one of the first Jalopnik writers and his stories were fun, including the one about this rented A4 that rolled on the Nurburgring:

The Car (Bristol 405) In the Movie An Education

I got dragged into seeing An Education, which turned out to be a decent movie. There is buzz that it may win an Oscar. The movie takes place in early 60s London and the centerpiece is a maroon Bristol 405. I am convinced that Bristol has NEVER made a decent looking car. Here is a funny clip of footage in the only Bristol showroom in the world. And yes, that's Rosamund Pike from the Bond film Die Another Day.

List of Cars With Gullwing Doors

It's gullwing-door Tuesday here at TT. Here are all of the gullwing doored production cars (and two concepts) that I was able to find.

Porsche Tapiro: It's got gullwing doors for ingress/egress and as hood doors as well.

Melkus RS 1000: East Germany's supercar.

Lamborghini Marzal: Too greenhouse-y.

DeTomaso Mangusta: Gullwing hood doors.

DeLorean: Most popular gullwing doored car for non-car enthusiasts.

Bricklin SV-1: Possibly the worst gullwing doored car.

Bristol Fighter: "Ugly Bristol" is redundant.

Autozam AZ-1: Looks like a cross between a Ford RS200 and a Suzuki Cappuccino. I may have to do a separate write-up about this.

Mercedes SLS: My favorite Mercedes of the last 30 years.

Gumpert Apollo: Too much. Just too much.

Isdera Commendatore: Never heard of this before. It's got gullwing doors for ingress/egress and as hood doors as well.

Jiotto Caspita: Never heard of this before either. Very generic looking.

BMW Turbo: This should have been the M1.

Mercedes 300SL: The original gullwing.

1978 Aston Martin V8's Competition

Power: 310-380 hp
Price: 22,999 pounds
Top Speed: 145 mph
0-60: 7.5 seconds
"A superb motor car."
"Excellent handling, astounding performance, powerful and progressive brakes, ride reasonable at low speeds, good at high speed."
"At the top of the supercar league."

Cars have always been compared with their peers. I'm sure when Gottlieb Daimler came up with his first car, some enterprising publisher in Dresden was lining up a 1770 Cugnot three-wheeler gun tractor (France) and an 1824 Gordon steamer with iron hooves (GB) for a rudimentary car comparo.

I've got an October 21, 1978, Motor article in front of me. It highlights the 1978 Aston Martin V8. On the last page, the author pits it against its competition. So what were they?

Power: 270 hp
Price: 21,996 pounds
Top Speed: 147 mph
0-60: 7.6 seconds
"Not as quick as some rivals, but more thirsty."
"Excellent high speed cruiser, handling good until limit is approached, but ride only fair. Engine less refined than those of many rivals, sounding strained at high revs; gear change slow. Powerful, progressive brakes. Interior finish leaves much to be desired. A disappointment-- not in the same league as the Aston."

Jaguar XJ-S
Power: 285 hp
Price: 15,149 pounds (cheapest of the bunch)
Top Speed: 155 mph
0-60: 6.7 seconds
"Exceptional performance and refinement and at a very competitive price."

Ferrari 400GT (412 pictured)
Power: 340 hp
Price: 27,000 pounds
Top Speed: 155 mph
0-60: 7 to 8 seconds
Only car not tested in the article, but I talked about it here.

Bristol 412
Power: 210 hp
Price: 27,097 pounds
Top Speed: 140 mph
0-60: 7.4 seconds
"Key offerings are an excellence of manufacture and exclusivity-- only 6000 have been built in 30 years."
"A unique amalgam of stirring performance and the ultimate luxury of wood and leather that only the British understand."

Power: 240 hp
Price: 19,499 pounds
Top Speed: 140 mph
0-60: 7.0 seconds
"Superlative road holding, and excellent handling in all but the most extreme conditions, with mediocre ride."

Power: 225 hp
Price: 18,250 pounds
Top Speed: 134 mph
0-60: 8.5 seconds
"Performance is more than adequate while the automatic transmission sets new standards."
