It looks like Ortega and his cronies are going forward with this project. It will be built and controlled by the Chinese. There are a lot of questions and potential consequences. Just off the top of my head:
- Will it truly rival the Panama Canal
- Will the U.S. try to stop its construction
- Will it actually be completed
- Environmental impact
- Impact on impoverished and Afro-Caribbean population on Atlantic side
- Nicaragua's diplomatic status with Taiwan and China
- Built by imported Chinese labor or locals
- Will China really turn over control of the canal to Nicaragua
- What if moderate or right-wing government wins control of Nicaragua
- Canal's build quality/safety
- Amount of bribes/corruption involved
