Mitsubishi had a nearby coal field and built up the island for its workers. It was promptly abandoned in the 1970s when it ran out of coal. It was once the most crowded place on Earth.
I know it's not on the same scale and is an imperfect comparison, but I was reminded of Kowloon Walled City, another Far East historical artifact which to me has a similar feeling of claustrophobia and desperation, albeit going about it a different way than Hashima.

I have a feeling I've seen the island before in another movie, but can't figure out which one. Fascinating place for sure.
