Next car finally decided!

After months (maybe years) of negotiations and whining, a deal has finally been reached with my better half.  No weekend classic car will be purchased.  However, I can get whatever I want to replace the Acura.  No matter how dorky, pricey to maintain, impractical, gas guzzling, unreliable, or just plain weird.  So what's it going to be?  I'll let you guess.  In the meantime, I'll be burning the midnight oil on Craigslist and eBay.

Minichamps Heidfeld 2010 Sauber C29 (sort of)

Guess what just came in the mail?  Heidfeld's 2010 Sauber.  But since Minichamps, unlike Spark diecast, refuses to make a 2010 Sauber driven by Heidfeld, I had to get one labeled Pedro de la Rosa.  Why not just get a Spark model?  Because all of my Heidfeld cars have to be Minichamps.  Once I get the Minichamps 2011 Lotus Renault R31, the Heidfeld F1 collection will be complete, because there is no way any F1 team will hire him after this season.  So I guess I'll be starting a Quick Nick DTM collection soon.

One incongruent thing I've noticed is that the Sauber is longer than all of the other 1/43 F1 cars I have.  It makes stacking them on top of each other impossible now.  This is not good for my OCD.

Yemen's Saleh, before and after rocket attack

That's a Russian rocket tan on the left.

This definitely falls in the couldn't-have-happened-to-a-nicer-guy category.  Yemen's leader Ali Abdullah Saleh has been president of North Yemen (and then Yemen) since 1978.  He refused to step down amid protests and was seriously injured (and burned) during a rocket attack on his compound on June 3.

Road trip in a VW Polo GTI

Our favorite Finn Edvin just completed a three week, 2,800 mile road trip through Northern and Central Europe in his new Polo GTI.  Once he recovers from the trip, he'll share some photos with us.  In the meantime, whet your collective appetites with this shot of the Polo on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria.

Germany sells 200 Leopard tanks to Saudi Arabia

As Israel no longer sees Saudi Arabia as a direct enemy (they both have Iran to hate), Germany was given the implicit green light to sell 200 Leopard 2A7+ tanks to the despotic kingdom.  This demonstration video from last year shows the Leopard used for crowd control.  Be sure to look for Leopards equipped with bulldozer blades at a peaceful Arabian Peninsula protest soon!
