Raph Orlove drives the original M5

A good friend of mine who's owned one from new lets me drive it from time to time. My overwhelming impression is of how mechanical it all feels. The engine revs and revs, pulls hard and sounds great, though the thing that really sticks with me is how it sounds and somehow feels like a big box of Swiss watch parts with thousands of precisely-machined gears meshing--so satisfying. It's not the gripiest or the fastest, but to me it's more fun than an E60 which just feels aloof as it steam-rollers the road into submission. The never-ending competition for bigger numbers is a race to the bottom.
