I am thumbing through the latest edition of Lonely Planet Colombia right now.
"Is Colombia Safe?
The short answer? Yes!
...it's infinitely safer than it once was...."
I guess it's all relative. I found this map from the UN Office On Drugs And Crime.

Granted this map is dated, but statistically, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, and Afghanistan are all safer than the United States (according to this map).
The US is about as safe as Yemen and Iran.
Turkey is surprisingly unsafe (relatively speaking).
@MTC: Yup, a lot has happened in the world in 2011 and 2012.
Once again, I'm glad to live in Chile! =)
