Eating the Globe: Madagascar

Cooking these international meals is quite fun.

This is Madagascar chicken. I used this recipe. It's chicken marinated in lemon juice, onion, garlic, bell pepper, coconut milk, cayenne pepper, lemon zest, and ginger. The lemon marinade essentially started the cooking process of the chicken, like ceviche. Because of the blandness of the last meal (Finnish macaroni casserole), I added extra cayenne pepper.

Since I had more than half a can of coconut milk left over, I thought I'd make rice with it. I got the proportions all wrong and it took forever for the rice to cook. Plus, because the rice took so long to cook, the chicken that was just sitting in the pan was overcooked.

Yes, you read that title right. No nudity in the news video, but probably NSFW. The guy who sent this link to me is dying of embarrassment right now.

2 Eastern European beers

I finished a big project today and went to the local Eastern European grocery store to unwind. I bought frozen Polish and Romanian foods and beers to accompany them.

Eating the Globe: Finland

Correct me if I'm wrong, Edvin.

The macaroni casserole (makaronilaatikko) is a Finnish comfort food. Many families have this once a week. I decided to make it tonight. I used this recipe. It's essentially ground beef, cheddar cheese, onions, milk, and elbow macaroni. The only seasonings are salt, black pepper, and nutmeg(!). The recipe calls for serving it with ketchup.

It's a very simple meal and with ketchup, it's perfect. Without ketchup, it's pretty bland.

This has given me the courage and motivation to cook more foreign meals.

Eating the Globe: Going to New York or cooking at home

I'm running out of local restaurants. One solution, though impractical, is to go to New York City for two weeks and eat there. I can pretty much check off Eastern Europe, ex-Soviet republics, West Africa, and the Caribbean in New York. I bet I can even find Surinamese cuisine there. I mean, look, there's a friggin' Moldovan restaurant in Brooklyn.

But realistically, cooking at home is the solution. There are all sorts of DIY videos available.

A tomato and egg breakfast dish from Azerbaijan looks simple.

And Kazakh TV has a cooking show about a Turkmen dish.

And a Kazakh dish.

And finally, this is incredible. Some guy is cooking a dish from every country in the world, in alphabetical order.
