Libya's Toyota War II

Unfortunately, the Libyan revolt is going to be long and bloody. It has already gone through one Toyota War; here is the second.

Police officers killed by guns statistics
We are quickly, and sadly, approaching the two-year anniversary of the Oakland police shootings. On March 21, 2009, a crazed and sick person shot and killed four police officers. This is not an isolated incident. In the last decade, 511 police officers have been killed by guns in the United States. Five hundred and eleven.
What is surprising and discouraging is the deafening silence over the issue of gun control in the American discourse. Just recently, after a lone gunman shot and killed six people and injured fourteen others (including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords), nobody even bothered to raise the issue. Not even a whisper was heard.
No one here is advocating a complete ban on firearms. That would be unconstitutional. It would also deprive tens of millions of peaceful and law-abiding citizens of their right to self-protection and recreation. And practically speaking, it would be beyond impossible to enforce. But can we all have an adult, calm, and rational discussion about background checks, registration, clip capacity, etc.?
We have an inferno raging. And unless we do something about it, more people are going to get burned.
These charts are from WaPo.

F1 Kubica get well video
Virtually every current F1 driver is featured here. It's on the official F1 site and is very popular-- so be patient with the download. Two questions-- How much does Kubica gamble? And how uncomfortable was Heidfeld?
Finally, Alonso's comment about not being in F1 to make friends is very telling, but not surprising.
Video here.

Canada GP 2011
Is anyone going to Montreal this June? If you've been before, do you recommend a specific grandstand?
I'm a huge fan; but this guy is dull!

100% Cork campaign
I'm no oenophile, but I thought it didn't matter what your wine cork was made out of. Well, the Portuguese cork people are spending a lot of money on this campaign (because they are losing a lot of money to plastic corks). The 100% Cork campaign even sponsored NPR today.

Jalopnik's new format design
Well, there is that elephant in the room. I really can't stand the new format. Haven't posted a comment there since the change. You can still read/view it in the classic style by adding "ca." in front of jalopnik. But it's just too tedious. Apparently, I'm not alone. By the way, the uber-commentariat at Gawker have fled en masse and set this up.
