Where in the world is Mayotte?

(I would love to have our regular readers in France and Reunion share their thoughts.)

A couple of days ago, I noticed someone from Mayotte visiting this blog, looking for information on the W126 sedan. Mayotte? Mayotte! I've never heard of it.

Mayotte is between Madagascar and mainland Africa. It is a part of the Comoros archipelago but its people opted to be a part of France. Recently, it became a French department.

Here is a great piece about the island from France 24. The English version of the video is here.

That France, or any country, can have such a faraway possession is mind boggling. I did a Wiki search and came upon this.
