I'm trying to start a series on athletes from the countries of our readers. I have already emailed some of you. If there is a particularly interesting athlete from your country who will be competing, please let me know in the comments section below or email me at milhousevanh at gmail dot com. And even if there is no one interesting from your country, just send me a name anyway. It will be fun. Thanks!
The white guy in your famous photo is the Aussie athlete Peter Norman, who came second inthe 200m. I heard a great radio story about Peter recently. He passed away a few years ago, and both Tommie Smith and John Carlos came to his funeral hre in Australia – they were all good friends. One nice detail is that for the salute the American athletes had planned on wearing black gloves on both raised hands, but forgot to bring two sets of black gloves. Peter helpfully suggested 'how about one black-gloved-hand raised each' and so that's what you see here.
ReplyDelete@Ozmac: I have always wondered about the story behind the white guy. Hmm.
ReplyDelete@All: So far, I've got suggestions for athletes from Australia, Finland, Brazil, Hungary, and Chile. Keep them coming please!
I'm super excited for the games. I love watching the olympics, but haven't seen any summer games since Athens '04.
ReplyDelete@Alan: You wanna pick an American athlete for us? You can be USA's honorary flagbearer too!
ReplyDeleteMaxilane,
ReplyDeleteWho's from Chicago?
Hmmm, let's say Shani Davis.
