Quirky Citroens

I am furiously working (in a good way) on my post-trip report/briefing to the lucky new owner of the Citroen XM.  Among the things I will mention are the unusual ergonomic and design issues he should be aware of when operating said XM.  Here are some of them, along with a few shots I took this morning.

Of course, the unique suspension is on top of the list.  Here is what the car looked like this morning.  Our Civic is on the right for comparison.

After starting the engine and waiting ten to twenty seconds, this is what it looked like.

Can you see where the horn is?

It's on the left turn signal indicator stalk, at the tip.  You push the button toward the steering column to honk.  Makes sense, right?

Engaging the parking brake is a TWO part process.

First, you press the P button.

THEN, you press the parking brake pedal.  (You release it by pulling the P button.)

The air conditioning is counterintuitive.  When the AC light is on, it means the AC is off.  When the AC light is off, it means the AC is on.

  1. My mom's 82 Ford Escort wagon had the horn activate the same way as in this XM, yet the Escort's steering wheel had twice as many spokes as the Citroen so you'd think there'd be plenty of real estate for a horn on the wheel.

  2. @midelectric: I think I figured it out. The same stalk is used to flash your high beams when you pass. So if something goes wrong while you pass, you can easily honk.

  3. I wonder what the Ford engineers were thinking...that Escort had no business being in the left lane.

  4. kashgar16 is right-ish. You can flash your lights and blow your horn at the same time when you're stuck behind a slower driver.

    Maybe the answer is to find a MKII XM steering wheel for a "normal" horn experience...
