DTM drivers Gary Paffet and Paul di Resta are also test drivers for F1 teams McLaren and Force India, respectively. They were both in Shanghai last weekend. With air travel being a mess, there was a strong chance that they weren't going to make it to Hockenheim for this weekend's DTM race.
Apparently, the backup plan was to have Heidfeld and Timo Glock, who returned to Europe early/on time, take Paffett and di Resta's spots. That would have been quite a race. Unfortunately, Paffett and di Resta made it back to Europe in time. Oh well.
Joe Saward wrote today about Schumacher's performance. He states that some people close to Schumacher claim he's not the same driver he used to be. Good friends, huh? Anyways, Joe Saward thinks there might be a chance that Schumacher throws up his arms and relinquishes his seat to Heidfeld. We'll see.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think he's better than what he's shown. I doubt he's as good as ever, but certainly he's better than we've seen this season. I see guys being competitive in other racing like Le Mans well into their 40's. So I don't think age is all that there is to it.
What's obivous now is that he's no myth. He can't drive the wheels off of any car. Neither could Senna or Prost. But Schumacher has always had a ? mark on his titles regarding whether it was just skill or great cars. His performances so far point to the latter.
Anyways... enough semi-off topic rants.
@F1O: Yeah, I got really excited about the Saward article when I read it this morning. The question now is, how many more races 'til the talk of retirement gets louder. Sure, it's only been four races. Should we wait to see his results after 4 European races? Should we wait until the end of the season? Statistically, MS has to finish ahead of Rosberg in quali or in a race eventually. Right?
ReplyDeleteHowever, other than a few die-hard Heidfeld fans, I don't see a lot of support for MS to step down and to let Heidfeld drive.
This is easily one of the most exciting storylines of the season. Nico is quickly becoming my favorite.
Kamui has been quite a dud, hasn't he?
