The Evolution of the Lincoln Trunk Lid Hump

Darwin's theory of evolution can be seen in full display with Lincoln's trunk lid hump. When the original Lincoln Continental came out in 1939, it had a functional spare tire cover directly behind the trunk.
The original: Aesthetically pleasing, but very functional, spare tire behind trunk of 1939 Lincoln

After the war, the Mark II had an integrated trunk lid hump. For the last time, a spare tire was truly underneath the hump. But as the years passed and new models were introduced, the vestigial hump got smaller and more subtle.
